Why Refer to Uptown Eye

Subspecialty expertise under one roof

Every patient you refer deserves the highest level of subspecialty care. Here’s what sets Uptown Eye Specialists apart.

Subspecialty-Trained Team

18 ophthalmologists covering most subspecialties: cataract, glaucoma, retina, oculoplastics, pediatric ophthalmology, cornea, and refractive surgery.

Led by co-founders Dr. Eric S. Tam, MD, FRCSC and Dr. Sohel Somani, MD, FRCSC (Co-Medical Directors of UVG), our hospital-credentialed surgeons — with appointments at William Osler Health System, Toronto Western Hospital (UHN), and Mount Sinai Hospital — with academic teaching appointments at leading GTA universities.

Research-Led Credibility

Canada’s highest-volume ReLACS (Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery) centre with a published outcomes study from 3,000+ cases led by Dr. Somani’s PRECISE research program.

Treatment recommendations guided by our own clinical data and 250+ peer-reviewed publications.

Seamless Coordinated Care

Your patient stays connected throughout their journey. Discharge summaries and clinical reports sent back to your office promptly.

Post-operative care returns to the referring optometrist for routine follow-up. A true partnership, not a handoff.

7-Day Cataract Surgical Access

With hospital ORs and two private ambulatory surgical centres, we perform cataract surgery seven days a week — including weekends. Your patients face significantly shorter wait times for both OHIP-covered and premium IOL procedures, and weekend availability means less time away from work for patients and their families.

Dedicated Professional Relations

Every referring office gets a single point of contact on our Professional Relations team — for booking coordination, clinical updates, and communication delivered the way your office prefers. Urgent referrals are expedited, and our specialists are directly accessible for time-sensitive clinical questions.

Full-Spectrum Eye Care Ecosystem

One referral opens the door to every subspecialty under one umbrella — cataract, glaucoma, retina, cornea, oculoplastics, paediatrics, plus the U Dry Eye Institute, U Optical, U Eye Laser Cosmetic, and U Surgical Centre. Your patients receive comprehensive, coordinated care without needing multiple specialist referrals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from referring doctors

Yes. We actively welcome referrals from doctors across the GTA and beyond. Our clinic volumes are well-managed and we maintain 48-hour appointment scheduling as a standard.

For routine referrals, we typically schedule appointments within 2–6 weeks, depending on subspecialty demand and patient availability. Urgent cases (retinal detachment, acute glaucoma) are prioritized and may be scheduled the same day or next business day.

Yes. While a formal referral letter is helpful for clinical context, patients can also call us directly to schedule if they don’t have a recent letter. Our intake team will help gather the necessary clinical information during the booking call.

All operative notes and clinical summaries are sent to your fax number or email (whichever you prefer) within 2–3 business days of the patient’s visit or surgery. You can also call us to request copies anytime.

Absolutely. Our surgeons are available to discuss complex cases or patient-specific concerns. If you haven’t already, sign up through our Professional Relations section above — your dedicated contact will connect you directly with the relevant specialist.

Yes. If a patient or referring doctor seeks a second opinion on a diagnosis or surgical plan, we welcome the opportunity to review and provide input. Submit the referral like any other and let us know it’s a second opinion request.

We believe in true coordinated care. Our surgeons see patients for scheduled post-operative visits (typically 1 day, 1 week, 4 weeks post-op, depending on procedure). Routine long-term follow-up (3+ months) returns to you. We’re always available if complications arise.

Most referrals are processed smoothly. The most helpful additions are: (1) clear reason for referral, (2) relevant test results or images, (3) patient’s preferred location or doctor (if applicable), and (4) urgency level. If any information is unclear, our team will call to clarify.
